Iran Now Walking Back and Repackaging One of Their Demands, Sounding Like Dems – RedState

The United States and Iran are reportedly reaching a deal to end hostilities and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

President Donald Trump has assured that he will not make the mistakes of the Obama-Iran deal and has focused on obtaining highly enriched uranium to deter the nuclear threat. In fact, he even sought broader peace in the region, asking other countries like Saudi Arabia to sign the Abraham Accords once the Iran deal was finalized.

This may also have prompted Iran to try to clarify its language regarding its idea of charging tolls for transiting the Strait of Hormuz. So the regime just came up with a clever move that looks like a move Democrats would make.

Ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz will have to pay fees for “navigation services”, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said on Monday.

Such payments for waterway transit do not constitute tolls, he told a press briefing.

“The services provided, navigation services, in addition to the necessary measures for environmental protection of the Strait of Hormuz, the Persian Gulf and the Arabian Sea, require the collection of certain fees,” Baghaei said, adding that Tehran “does not seek to collect tolls.”

Oh, then they’ll scream “environmental fees” like the Democrats to get money, leaving out that the only environmental problem is the Iranian regime stopping and attacking ships. Oh, and maybe the regime is releasing oil into the Persian Gulf because it no longer has storage capacity.

They desperately need money, given everything that has crushed them, and they want to officially establish that they control the strait.

The New York Times reports that they are in talks with Oman on the matter. The strait involves the territorial waters of Iran and Oman.

Ultimately, though, it doesn’t matter what you call it; it’s still very much about trying to retain people.

Under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), all ships have the right to unimpeded passage, and states cannot charge for or prevent this passage, even if it is within their territorial waters. Even though Iran is not a signatory to UNCLOS, Oman is, and Iran still cannot do it even if it has not signed it. Oman has already said it will not impose tolls because it has agreed to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, so it remains to be seen whether this New York Times report is accurate. The lure of money might lure Oman, but it wouldn’t make their neighbors happy.

Meanwhile, the United States and many other countries have already spoken out against any impeachment attempts. And they can’t let Iran take control, as this episode of bad behavior demonstrated. But it’s so typical of Iran when they realized they had to go back on the tolls, to try to repackage them into something more legally acceptable.

But that won’t fly either.
