Do you have some old, obsolete gas-powered tools that you would like to give new life to? If so, Makita has an exciting new product that you will absolutely love. Makita is launching an XGT 40V max electric motor, which is a 25-50cc gas engine replacement electric motor that you can install, bolt on and go.

At the World of Concrete 2026 show this week, Makita announced its next-generation gas replacement solution, and it looks pretty awesome. Although the primary use of the XGT motor block is for power tools, it could extend well beyond into fun DIY projects like Go-Karts and much more. The possibilities are endless.

A few years ago, Makita completely stopped production of its extensive collection of gasoline engine products, switching to fully electric power tools for enthusiasts, professionals, DIYers and more. Since then, Makita has continued its efforts to offer exceptional power tools and neat battery-powered accessories.

Makita’s new power unit is an all-electric motor that runs on its popular 40V XGT battery platform, which many owners likely already own for drills, impact wrenches, leaf blowers, and more. The idea here is that you can buy the XGT engine block, install it on older gas tools, and give them a touch of modern technology that will keep them running for years.

All you need is the motor unit and a few 40V batteries, and you’re set. Plus, this essentially mixes its new, modern line of cordless power tools with those of yesteryear.

In the press release, Makita specifically mentions several of its concrete tools, such as a screed, trowel, and concrete vibrators, but that’s just the beginning. The company also explained that OEMs are not required to invest thousands of dollars in battery-powered tools. Instead, this one-time purchase allows them to compete with other major brands like Milwaukee, while being just as powerful and quiet, without the mess and smell of gas/oil. “Remove the gas engine, install a Makita-powered motor, and instantly access the same battery platform that powers more than 170 XGT tools and equipment.”

Makita’s 18V power tool platform is excellent, but the larger 40V XGT line is designed for professionals. In recent years this range has expanded to over 170 items, which you will often see on a construction site. Here’s what Mario Lopez, Director of Product at Makita USA, said: “Over the years, we have provided solutions that have replaced cords, gas and air on the jobsite. But we saw an opportunity to expand gasoline engine replacement even further. »

The power tool company says its new electric motor offers the same performance as 25-50cc gas tools. Additionally, the XGT engine unit features a universal mounting system, adjustable RPMs to suit specific tools or tasks and an adjustable throttle response mode. It also incorporates features such as a clutch shaft, different types of threaded spindle drives and it is IPX5 rated for dust and water.

I wouldn’t necessarily call this a consumer product, as it’s aimed more at professionals and OEMs, but I’m already starting to imagine all the ways I can tinker with this cute little electric motor. It’s basically a complete 2 stroke engine replacement, and I want one. Pricing hasn’t been announced yet, but it will be available in North America later this summer.
