Fashion designer Jeremy Scott received a round of applause from graduates after tearing up a generic commencement speech written by generative artificial intelligence at the Kansas City Art Institute on May 16.

Scott began reading his speech from his AI-created script that congratulated the students on reaching the “threshold of a new beginning” and told them that “their power is limitless.”

But then he took a break, according to Business Insider.

“It seems a bit cliché, doesn’t it? It doesn’t sound authentic, does it? It sounds like you’ve heard it before, right? That’s because it’s AI,” he told the promo before him.

Then he tore up the script and told the graduates that they shouldn’t want “the AI overlords to tell you what’s right and what’s wrong.”

Scott went on to point out that AI cannot create. It can only echo, reflect and imitate true human creativity.

“He can’t do what you do. He can’t have an original idea. He can’t even tell the difference between a good idea, a unique idea and a mediocre idea,” he said.

“That’s what makes your role as an artist even more urgent right now,” the designer continued. “In this space and time we live in, I argue that the artist is even more crucial than ever. This is because an artist does not tell the truth. They decide what the truth looks like. They are a master of reality while being a mirror of society.”

Americans are developing a complex reaction to AI. Many, for example, are rising up to oppose data centers needed to facilitate the construction of AI systems in their regions. Others are denouncing AI memes and images that are taking over their favorite websites, such as X, Facebook and other social media sites.

This anti-AI sentiment runs counter to the many experts who continue to insist that AI is poised to remake humanity and usher in a wonderful new era for humanity.

Pundits and technocrats continue to warn that the society that avoids AI will be left behind and find itself on the losing side of economic prosperity and technological progress, but many average citizens seem to think that AI will mean a loss of their humanity, instead of a revelation.

Scott’s fight against AI is further proof that the battle lines are increasingly being drawn in the march toward AI supremacy.
