Two cops shot and suspect dead after gunfire erupted in busy shopping center the day after Christmas

TWO police officers are fighting for their lives after a shooter pulled out a gun in the middle of a busy shopping center and began opening fire.
The suspect was killed after causing post-Christmas chaos in the small North Carolina town during a child custody exchange.
The violence took place at Mint Hill Commons Friday morning in Mint Hill, outside Charlotte.
Around 10:47 a.m., officers rushed to an edibles store in the mall after the suspect pulled out a gun while handing over the child.
The man exchanged gunfire with officers and injured two officers before being shot and killed, the Mint Hill Police Department said in a statement.
Horrified witnesses say they saw police run into the store and emerge bloodied, NBC affiliate WCNC reported.
Kevin Phayme, who runs a pizzeria across the street, said his employees watched the violence unfold during a smoke break.
“They did not hear gunshots but they saw two agents enter the Edibles establishment,” he told the local media.
“They saw one of the police officers come out with blood on his face and he was being taken away by his partner.”
Lawmakers sent their prayers and expressed concern over the distressing situation.
In a statement, North Carolina Senator Woodson Bradley said: “This is horrific. My heart goes out to the officers and their families.
“Custody exchanges are THE MOST DANGEROUS SITUATIONS for a separated/divorced spouse with an abusive ex.
“Let us pray for the recovery of these officers. »
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation sent agents to assist in the investigation.
