President Donald Trump said several cities across the country could face federal measures after declaring a public security emergency in Washington, DC here is a glimpse of some of the country’s cities in the highest violent crimes.

Why it matters

Trump announced on Monday that 800 national guard troops would be sent to the national capital to “restore law, order and public security”. He invoked the federal power to take over the Metropolitan Police Department, citing “special conditions of an emergency nature” under the law on the rule of the domicile of the Columbia district.

He warned that efforts to combat crime “would go further”, appointing cities like Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Baltimore as potential targets.

“You look at Chicago, how bad it’s. You look at Los Angeles, how bad it is. We have other cities that are very bad. New York has a problem. And then you have, of course, Baltimore and Oakland. We don’t even mention that there,” said Trump.

What to know

Trump arose as a “difficult to crime” president over the years and has expressed concerns about the crime rate in Washington, DC, however, in 2024, violent crimes have decreased considerably in the national capital.

There were 187 homicides last year, against 274 in 2023 and 2,113 flights in 2024 against 3,468 in 2023, according to data from the Metropolitan Police Department.

Not all agencies relate to the office, so the list is not entirely complete. Trump only mentioned two of the following potential federalization targets: Chicago and Baltimore.

Trump’s decision to deploy the national guard troops has followed other daycare orders this year, including a June investment in Los Angeles – ceased to repress immigration demonstrations, according to the White House – which attracted a legal exam.

While communities across the country continue to fight crime, the FBI’s latest report has found that crime has decreased overall. Violent crimes dropped from 4.5% from 2023 to 2024, while the crime of goods fell 8.1. percent. Haine crimes fell 1.5% during this same period.

The crime generally increased during the COVVI-19 pandemic, but has since fallen into most cities.

Muriel Bowser, mayor of Washington, DC, said at a press conference: “I cannot say that given part of the rhetoric of the past, we are totally surprised.”

The chief of the Hakeem Jeffries House, a New York Democrat, wrote to X: “Violent crimes in Washington, DC are at thirty years old. Donald Trump has no foundation to resume the local police service. And no credibility on the issue of law and order.

Senator Angela Alsobrooks, a Maryland Democrat, wrote to X: “The city of Washington, DC belongs to the great people of Washington, DC, not to the occupant of the White House. If he really cared about the well-being of the inhabitants of Washington, he would not have prevented DC from spending his own money in the way he judged good. He is not only a drastic executive, but the last marker in the way this president is arranged to attack.”

US prosecutor Pam Bondi said at a press conference: “Let me be crystalline: DC crime ends and ends today. We will use all the power we have to fight criminals here.”

What happens next

Trump said he could take federal measures to manage crime in other cities, but details have not been made public.
