George Clooney has French citizenship

George Clooney and his family are French citizens.
The Oscar-winning movie star, his wife Amal and their children have been granted French citizenship, according to the Guardian. Clooney said in October that his 8-year-old twins had a “much better life” in France than in the United States.
While some American artists headed abroad in early 2025 for reasons that seemed related to the country’s changing political environment, Clooney told Esquire that he believed the French’s relative indifference toward celebrity children would benefit his children.
“I don’t want them to worry about the paparazzi,” Clooney said. “I don’t want them to be compared to someone else’s famous kids.”
Clooney, who now holds dual American and French citizenship, married British human rights lawyer Amal Clooney in 2014. She speaks French fluently, according to the Guardian.
The 64-year-old actor told The New York Times in February that his family still owns homes in England and the United States, but spends most of their time on a farm in France, where they enjoy privacy.
Celebrities including Rosie O’Donnell and Ellen DeGeneres have reported recently leaving the United States in favor of a more liberal cultural climate.
That’s not Clooney’s stated reason for moving, but he did say in a 2020 interview with SIRIUS radio host Howard Stern that he considered the U.S. president to be a “stupid idiot” who was desperate to be seen with celebrities like him. Trump called Clooney a “second-rate movie star” in a social media post in March.
