“I still strongly believe in Trump’s immigration laws that say, ‘Let’s get the bad guys out of here.’ You know, they’re murderers, they’ve killed people, they’ve assaulted people, let’s get them out of here,” Ceballos told the publication. “But I feel like I don’t fit into that category. And I feel like that’s how they treat me.”

Ceballos has been convicted of misdemeanor battery since 1994 for a fight involving several people, which he said was related to his first marriage. He does not appear to have had any problems with the law since. After being accused of illegal voting, he resigned. But Coldwater residents came to his defense, with ads placed in the local newspaper supporting Ceballos at his court hearing, which was attended by such a crowd that it was standing room only.

Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach, who has exposed voter fraud for more than a decade, is trying to make an example of Ceballos. At a press conference announcing the charges against Ceballos, he said: “Non-citizen voting is a real problem. It’s not something that happens once every ten years. It’s something that happens quite frequently.”
