The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) is driving growth in Germany’s legal technology sector, with around 300 companies now offering automated legal services, according to Germany’s Legal Tech Association.

About a third target consumers directly, promising fast, affordable help for everyday legal problems.

Companies such as Flightright and Conny handle claims against airlines, insurers or owners, while others connect online users to appropriate legal professionals. Many are using AI to speed up processes and reduce costs, often by charging only when customers receive compensation.

Alisha Andert, president of the Legal Tech Association, said digital services can make the law more accessible and build trust in the legal system. Access to justice should be as simple as possible for consumers, while courts continue to handle cases with due diligence, she told dpa.

Andert added that legal technology does not replace lawyers but complements their work, helping to ensure that legal services reach those who need them.

Consumer groups advise users to check a company’s reputation and reviews before using such technology services. Legal services in Germany remain strictly regulated, generally restricted to licensed lawyers. Some start-ups operate within legal exceptions, acting as debt or claims recovery service providers.
