While there is certainly no shortage of Christmas films to choose from, holiday-themed TV shows are harder to come by. But thankfully, Netflix has the perfect festive series that also just so happens to be a quick binge. In fact, you can easily watch it in one day. So, instead of trying to pick which Christmas movie to watch, you should check out Dash & Lily on Netflix.

Dash & Lily contains everything one would want in a TV show centered around the holidays, from its setting to its unique and enthralling love story.

Dash & Lily is available to stream on Netflix

Dash & Lily premiered on Netflix on November 10, 2020, and consists of eight episodes. It is based on Rachel Cohn and David Levithan’s young adult book series Dash & Lily’s Book of Dares, but it also alters quite a few plotlines from the novels. The romantic comedy TV show follows the titular characters, Austin Abrams’s Dash and Midori Francis’s Lily, as they connect and communicate via a notebook in the Strand Bookstore in New York City.

Lily writes a series of clues and dares in said notebook and places it on one of the bookshop’s shelves, and Dash just so happens to be the boy to pick it up. The two characters write back and forth to one another in the notebook, with the ultimate prize being the reveal of Lily’s identity. Dash just has to complete Lily’s dares (and eventually vice versa).

All eight episodes of Dash & Lily are only 23 to 27 minutes long, meaning subscribers can technically binge-watch the entire show in one sitting. Its total runtime adds up to a little over three and a half hours. Unfortunately, Dash & Lily was canceled after only one season. But the finale doesn’t end on a cliffhanger. Plus, it tells a complete story, making it worthwhile to watch the Christmas-centric Netflix miniseries.

Aside from being an easy binge, Dash & Lily‘s story and aesthetic make it the perfect watch for the holiday season. Dash and Lily’s meeting (via the famous notebook and in person later on) is quite idyllic, especially for anyone who loves romance books and unique meet-cutes. However, that doesn’t mean their story is perfect from beginning to end. Yes, it’s still sweet and fun, as every holiday TV show should be, but Dash & Lily is more than that.

While Dash & Lily is a Christmas series, it contains an air of realism as the main couple’s arc is the furthest thing from uncomplicated. It also doesn’t help that both characters have relatable flaws that impede their search for a happy ending. They’re two young adults who make mistakes, after all. Nevertheless, Dash & Lily‘s plot remains heartwarming.

Even if you’re not the biggest fan of romance, Dash & Lily is quite a festive affair that will appeal to any fanatics of Christmas (or the holidays in general). As mentioned, the Netflix TV series is set in New York City, and there’s no better place to be in December.

Dash & Lily manages to highlight the city’s holiday cheer, which includes jolly decorations, celebrations, traditions, and more. It even includes one episode centered around Hanukkah, and the show’s finale takes place on New Year’s Eve. It simply embodies the holiday season. And ultimately, who doesn’t enjoy a good love story that takes place during the holidays in New York?

Even though its source material consists of three books, Netflix decided to end Dash & Lily after only its first season. In theory, the Netflix romance comedy series could continue with more seasons. However, the streaming service canceled the show in October 2021, meaning its story has come to an end, and fans won’t get to see more of Dash and Lily’s adventures.

Netflix has a bit of a cancellation problem, as the platform tends to axe its original TV series after only one season (even if they have strong and loyal fanbases, like Dash & Lily). So, the show’s cancellation isn’t too surprising. It also didn’t help that it debuted during the COVID-19 pandemic. Dash & Lily‘s ending is still heartbreaking, though, given that it has the potential to continue, and that there are still two more books to adapt from Cohn and Levithan’s novel series.

Sometimes, other networks and streaming services pick up canceled shows, but that wasn’t the case for Dash & Lily. As such, season two is a pipe dream, and you shouldn’t expect it to ever come to fruition. It has been years since its premiere, and there haven’t been any rumors about the romance comedy continuing on Netflix or any other platform. On the plus side, Dash & Lily is still a fantastic and complete watch, especially during the holidays.
