USA hockey sweeps Olympic gold medals for first time as men, women beat Canada

American hockey is officially gold. For the first time in Olympic history, Team USA won a string of hockey gold medals in both the men’s and women’s events at the Milan Cortina 2026 Olympic Games as the men won a 2-1 overtime game against Canada on Sunday to win the Americans’ first gold medal in 46 years.
THE the women won in almost identical fashion with a 2-1 overtime win over Canada Friday to win their first gold medal in eight years.
The United States is only the second country in history to win gold medals in men’s and women’s hockey at the same Olympics, joining Canada, which has done so three times in 2002, 2010 and 2014.
The Americans had not won gold since the famous “Miracle on Ice” team beat the Soviet Union in 1980. Sunday’s victory came exactly 46 years to the day (February 22, 1980).
The United States now has three Olympic gold medals among men, having first won the hardware in 1960. Sunday’s victory was their first off-ice at the Olympics. The women have also won three gold medals, having taken top honors in 1998 and 2018.
Four of the United States’ six Olympic gold medals in hockey were won by beating Canada.
