Luna aims to oust Swalwell, Cherfilus-McCormick
Rep. Anna Paulina Luna is leading calls for the expulsion of two Democratic lawmakers — Eric Swalwell and Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick — following reports of sexual assault and misappropriation of campaign funds.
Ms. Luna, Republican of Florida, said on Saturday that she would file a motion to expel Mr. Swalwell from Congress over the California Democrat’s rape allegations. She called for his resignation, otherwise she will advance the proposal next week.
California’s leading gubernatorial candidate has been accused of multiple instances of sexual assault after a former staffer said he assaulted her twice when she was too drunk to consent.
Ms. Luna asked whether Democrats would “vote to protect this corruption” or support the motion to expel him.
As prominent party leaders called for investigations into the allegations and other allies suspended their support, Mr Swalwell called the accusations “absolutely false”.
Ms. Luna cited the Californian as an example of men in Congress accused of harmful actions toward women.

She referenced the House Ethics Committee’s findings that Cherfilus-McCormick, a Florida Democrat, committed dozens of campaign finance-related ethics violations, including inflating the strength of her campaign through illicit transfers. Ms. Luna’s objective is therefore to oust her fellow Floridian.
Expulsion is the harshest method of discipline in Congress, most recently that of former Rep. George Santos. The House voted to impeach the New York Republican in 2023 following accusations of campaign finance fraud and other violations.
Democrats would be expected to respond by expelling Rep. Tony Gonzales, who is under investigation by House Ethics for allegations of sexual misconduct, according to Axios.
