The holidays are fast approaching and Google is giving us a few gift safety tips.

In a wide-ranging blog post about frauds and scams published on its website, Google warned users about a number of things, including malicious VPNs. According to Google, some bad faith actors are disguising their software as legitimate VPNs for users who think they might need it. Anyone who downloads one could be a victim of data theft (or worse). Google didn’t, however, cite specific examples of VPNs you shouldn’t mess with.

Although not detailed, Google has offered some tips that should help keep you safe.

Crushable speed of light

“Only download VPN apps from official sources and look for apps with the VPN badge on Google Play. Be skeptical of free offers and avoid loading unknown apps,” Google wrote. “Users should carefully review the permissions the app asks for: a VPN should not need to access things like your contacts or private messages. Always pay attention to browser download warnings and leave your antivirus software turned on.”

In other words, don’t load strange apps on your Android device if you don’t know where they come from. If you get something from the Play Store, there should be a verification badge letting you know you can use it. Follow these tips and you should have an easier time avoiding serious problems this holiday season.
