GOP centrist Rep. Don Bacon won’t seek re-election in battleground district

A center of GOP from house in a key district of the battle, representative Don Bacon, R-NEB., Announced on Monday that he would not ask for his re-election next year.

“After 30 years in the Air Force and 10 years in Congress, it is time to spend my future with the love of my life, our four children and our wonderful grandchildren. Thank you, Nebraska!” Bacon announced on Monday.

Bacon’s announcement comes as the congress works in overtime to adopt the “Big and Beautiful Bill” by President Donald Trump by their self-imposed deadline of July 4. Thanks to the reconciliation process, Megabill seeks to keep the president’s key promises, including tax reductions, immigration reform and energy production.

The moderate republican has built a reputation for Trump’s program in the house. While Bacon finally voted with his republican colleagues to adopt the Big Beautiful Bill Act last month, the Republican of Nebraska had concerns about the impact of the proposed Medicaid cuts.

Bacon said earlier this month that he would vote against the White House cancellation proposal if she reduced an AIDS rescue program. Last month, he was the only republican to vote against a bill in the Chamber to change Trump’s name for the Gulf of America. Bacon, a faithful supporter of Ukraine, also criticized Trump’s position on his war with Russia.

Senator Thom Tillis, RN.C., announced Sunday that he would not ask for the re -election of next year either. Like Bacon, Tillis was willing to school Trump and the republican party on key issues, including the Big Beautiful Bill law. Tillis was one of the two Republicans who voted against a procedural vote on the bill in the Senate this weekend.

Bacon has been the 2nd district of the Nebraska Congress since 2017. He won his re -election in 2024 less than two percentage points.

Former vice-president Kamala Harris won his district by nearly five percentage points in 2024. The Nebraska is one of the two states that divides his votes from the electoral college during the presidential elections of the Congress district.

The Bacon Congress District was already a high target room seat for Democrats before the mid-term competitive elections in 2026.

“Writing has been on the wall for months,” the spokesman for the Congress Democrat Congress (DCCC), Madison Andrus on Friday.

“The Nebraskans are tired of the false promises that the Republicans are trying to sell, and they want real results. Don Bacon’s decision not to ask for re-election in 2026 is the last voting non-confidence for the republicans of the Chamber and their electoral prospects. Added next November.
