GOP Pushes to Trim Excessive Migrant Aid Now – RedState

We all saw, under the late and unlamented Biden administration, how quickly people streaming into the United States through Joe Biden’s open borders learned to claim “refugee” status. This assured them uncontested, no-questions-asked entry into the United States, even though they had crossed every country between Tierra del Fuego and the Texas border to claim “refugee” status from the first American they encountered.
For this reason, during the Biden years, federal spending on these “refugees” has exploded. Now, congressional Republicans are seeking to reduce that amount, and, predictably, they’re running into some opposition.
When Congress returns next week, lawmakers will have less than a month to pass the nine remaining appropriations bills funding federal agencies in the 2026 fiscal year.
However, there are already signs of further delay, with two Republican senators pledging to vote against the Labor, Health and Human Services bill due to the inclusion of $5.69 billion for refugee support services.
The amount is less than the $6.3 billion that HHS’s Administration for Children and Families, which runs various support programs for refugees and asylum seekers, received in fiscal years 2024 and 2025.
But it remains three times higher than pre-Joe Biden presidency funding levels, leading U.S. Sens. Mike Lee, R-Utah, and Rand Paul, R-Ky., to openly oppose the Labor-HHS funding bill.
Personally, I would prefer to see spending on refugee services reduced to near zero. Some groups have legitimate claims for refugee status, although there was an outcry from the “woke” left when the Trump administration brought in a small group of white Afrikaners who feared theft of their land and possible murder. But there is no good reason to spend nearly $6 billion on aid to everyone around the world who claims “refugee” status to enter the United States.

Concrete example: we have seen, in recent days, a lot of virtual ink spilled on the various fraudulent schemes launched by Somali nationals, in Minneapolis and elsewhere around the fruity plain. The majority of these people arrived in the United States in the 2010s, claiming refugee status, and yes, Somalia was a disaster then; in reality an anarchy, led by brutal warlords.
Today, billions of U.S. taxpayer dollars have returned to Somalia, much of it in suitcases carried by Somali couriers.
The Senate needs to carefully review this bill. The United States cannot and should not be expected to accommodate all aggrieved people everywhere. The American taxpayer should not be expected to pay for the stream of social benefits these individuals receive. Enough is enough. Reducing these expenses will reduce the incentive. Removing these incentives will reduce the number of people claiming “refugee” status. This is a problem that Congress can actually help solve.
Here’s where things stand:
Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., intends to hold a vote on a five-bill minibus, which includes the Labor-HHS bill, as soon as lawmakers return.
The bipartisan minibus also includes FY 2026 funding for federal agencies responsible for transportation, housing and urban development; Defense; Commerce, justice and science; and Interior.
If Congress does not pass these bills by February 1, the end date of the current CR, they risk a partial government shutdown.
If a partial shutdown is necessary to, at least, return this program to pre-Biden spending levels, then fine. Stop him.
