Hakeem Jeffries Has Totally Pathetic Plan to Rein in ICE
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries is taking action to protect American citizens by banning… something that is already illegal.
Speaking at a news conference at the Capitol on Thursday, Jeffries announcement that, as a condition of supporting legislation to fund the Department of Homeland Security as it continues its deadly immigration crackdown in Minneapolis, Democrats will demand a ban on deporting U.S. citizens.
“What country do we live in if it is controversial to ban [the deportation] American citizens? » said Jeffries. “This shouldn’t even be a discussion.”
This shouldn’t be up for discussion because it’s already illegal. The expulsion of U.S. citizens is not authorized under the Immigration and Nationality Actwhich describes the rules for deporting non-citizens. This also violates a 1958 Supreme Court decision which concluded that stripping a person of their U.S. citizenship violated the Eighth Amendment protection against “cruel and unusual punishments”.
But the Trump administration is I always do it anyway, sweep away American citizens as part of its immigration control efforts.
Senate Democrats have also proposed immigration reforms, such as requiring federal agents to wear body cameras, banning the use of face masks and enforcing a new code of conduct. But they miss the point.
It seems that Jeffries, like his Senate colleagues, has not truly understood that the cruelties of Donald Trump’s lawless immigration crackdown cannot be reformed because they are already lawless. Instead, Democrats will continue to find ways to assuage their consciences while filling the coffers of federal agencies that have allowed American citizens to be killed in the streets.
