Actress Keira Knightley has refused to call out author JK Rowling for her views on transgender ideology, stressing that people should learn to respect each other’s opinions.

Speaking with Decider about joining Audible’s voice casting Harry Potter: the complete audio editions As Professor Umbridge, Knightley said she “wasn’t aware” that some fans had boycotted the franchise due to the author’s outspoken opinions.

“You know, I think we’re all living in a time where we’re all going to have to figure out how to live together, right?” » Knightley said. “And we all have very different opinions. I hope we can all find respect.”

Rowling became a lightning rod for online hate campaigns in 2020 when she spoke out against transgender ideology, sparking accusations of transphobia. In response, Harry Potter film stars Emma Watson, Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint distanced themselves from her by making statements in support of transgender ideology. In September, Watson attempted to walk back his comments, saying, “I hope I can continue to love people who I don’t necessarily share the same opinion with.”

“I really don’t believe that having gone through this experience and having the love and support and opinions that I have means that I can’t and don’t cherish Jo and the person that I had personal experiences with,” Watson said. “I will never believe that one negates the other and that my experience of that person, I can’t keep and cherish. Going back to our previous story, I just don’t think those things are one or the other. I think it’s my deepest wish to hope that people who don’t agree with my opinion will love me, and I hope that I can continue to love people that I don’t necessarily share the same opinion with.”

Rowling later called Watson “ignorant” in an article on X.

“I don’t need a forever deal from an actor who played a character I created. The idea is as ridiculous as asking the boss I had when I was 21 what opinions I should have these days,” she said. “Emma Watson and her co-stars have every right to adhere to gender identity ideology. Such beliefs are legally protected, and I would not want to see any of them threatened with job loss, violence, or death because of them.”
