It is now more expensive than ever to broadcast shows like Dragon House And Tips. On Tuesday, October 21, Warner Bros. Discovery has announced that all HBO Max subscription prices will increase, effective immediately. In fact, for some plans, it’s now more expensive to subscribe to HBO Max than to subscribe to Netflix.

Here’s the deal: Prices are increasing across all three subscription tiers of HBO Max. This includes the following:

  • HBO Max Basic with Ads: $10.99 per month (instead of $9.99 per month) or $109.99 per year (instead of $99.99 per year)

  • HBO Max Standard: $18.49 per month (instead of $16.99 per month) or $184.99 per year (instead of $169.99 per year)

  • HBO Max Premium: $22.99 per month (instead of $20.99 per month) or $229.99 per year (instead of $209.99 per year)

These price levels are now in effect for all new subscribers. Current monthly subscribers will be notified of the price increase and will see increases in their next billing cycle, beginning November 20, 2025. Likewise, annual subscribers will not see a price increase until their plans renew. If you signed up for an annual Premium subscription yesterday, for example, you’re locked into that $209.99 price until next year. However, if your annual Premium plan renews next month, you will be charged this additional $20.

This is, of course, the most expensive amount HBO Max has ever cost, and will be particularly felt by any subscribers who pay for additional member accounts. In fact, HBO Max Basic With Ads and HBO Max Standard now cost significantly more than Netflix with Ads and Netflix Standard. Netflix with ads costs just $7.99 right now, while Netflix Standard costs $17.99. It costs $0.50 more to subscribe to HBO Max Standard than Netflix Standard, and $3 more to subscribe to manage HBO ads compared to Netflix ads. The only advantage HBO Max still has is in the Premium category, as Netflix charges $24.99 for the privilege of 4K content with four simultaneous streams at once.

If you look at these price points and commit to only using one streaming service at a time, you might be convinced to go the Netflix route. As such, Warner Bros. Discovery could be banking on demand for its content rather than dollars and cents here: between series like The last of us, The golden age, The PenguinAnd The White Lotusand content like Weapons And PeacemakerHBO Max is home to some of the most talked about shows. Maybe this will convince people to stick with the service even despite these price hikes, especially since the Game of Thrones spin-off A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is on the horizon.
