A 34‑year‑old Hephzibah man died early Monday after becoming unresponsive during an encounter with Richmond County sheriff’s deputies who were responding to a reported domestic violence incident, authorities said.

Deputies were called to the 4200 block of James Drive at about 8 p.m. Sunday, according to a Richmond County Sheriff’s Office news release. Upon arrival, deputies secured the scene and attempted to take Jonathan Aaron McElroy into custody. The news release did not name any potential charges against McElroy.

Authorities said McElroy was non‑compliant during the encounter. A Taser was deployed, and McElroy later became unresponsive while still on scene, officials said.
