HIMSSCast: VR and genAI are driving the golden age of nurse training

Sensitive, compassionate and attentive students increase their skills in communication and nursing care while wearing virtual reality glasses, according to those of the nursing program of the Central University of North Carolina, VR simulations helped by generative artificial intelligence.

While many nursing students often lack confidence in a clinical framework after their studies and exams, NCCU students report greater competence and time management, said Tina Scott, director of experiential learning for the nursing program.

VR simulations, helped by Genai, create one as close to realistic experience as possible – apart from meeting patients in real life.

About a year with the addition of a conversational AI superimposed on the NCCU virtual reality training simulations, Scott said it thought it was the best thing. The way VR is helped by conversational AI is “incredible,” she said.

“The AI really brings … it’s very realistic.”

The precision and realism generated by patients in the virtual platform were the most beneficial for students to help them see the gaps in their dating documentation.

The training begins the day before a planned VR simulation when students are assigned to find out more about the virtual patients they see and what they will have to do during their quarter -one in a virtual hospital. Then, in the SIM laboratory, nursing students prioritize their patients, speak to their virtual patients during their assessments and describe their approaches to care.

It should be noted that students document their virtual care for patients in real time, but do not use Genai to support their own cartography so that teachers can assess their competence.

“This reflects the real response of the students,” she said.
