Florida Republican Rep. Cory Mills narrowly avoided a formal rebuke from his colleagues Wednesday night after the vast majority of House Republicans voted to scuttle the measure.

Mills managed to escape the censure resolution proposed by South Carolina Republican Rep. Nancy Mace, which would have stripped him of his committee assignments. Nearly all Republican lawmakers and half of Democrats voted to table the measure and refer Mills to the House Ethics Committee in a vote that exposed Republican infighting. Mace stood at the podium as her censure resolution was read and looked directly at Mills, who was sitting a few seats away from her.

Only seven Republicans voted with Mace to advance his measure censuring Mills.

The GOP lawmakers include Reps. Anna Paulina Luna of Florida, Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, Lauren Boebert of Colorado, Tim Burchett of Tennessee, Joe Wilson of South Carolina, Kat Cammack of Florida and Hariett Hageman of Wyoming.

Mace, who has stepped up her criticism of Mills in recent months, forced a vote on her resolution she introduced earlier Wednesday, citing myriad ethics allegations against her Republican colleague. The resolution would remove Mills from the House Armed Services and Foreign Affairs committees.

Mace’s resolution builds on NOTUS reports that disputed Mills’ version of the events that led to him being recommended for a Bronze Star. The measure also highlights a December 2024 Office of Congressional Ethics report that found Mills may have violated House rules by potentially retaining federal contracts while in office. Mills previously worked as a defense contractor before entering Congress in 2023.

The failed censorship efforts come after the House Ethics Committee announced Wednesday the creation of a new subcommittee to investigate a series of allegations against Mills involving sexual misconduct and financial improprieties. Mills has always denied any wrongdoing.

Mace criticized the ethics committee for deciding to announce a new investigation into Mills just hours before the vote on his censure resolution.

“This is a simple attempt to kill my resolve to censure Rep. Cory Mills,” Mace wrote on

The South Carolina Republican was referring to a Florida judge barring Mills in October from having any contact with his ex-girlfriend, Lindsey Langston, who is the reigning Miss United States. Langston accused Mills of threatening to post sexually explicit photos and videos of her after their relationship ended in February.

Mills has not been charged in connection with the revenge porn allegations.

House Democrats have already repeatedly threatened to pass a censure measure against Mills in an effort to head off GOP-led efforts to formally reprimand Democrats. New York Democratic Rep. Yvette Clarke withdrew her resolution to censure Mills Tuesday night after Republicans failed to secure enough votes to reprimand Democratic Delegate Stacey Plaskett for her ties to the late sexual predator Jeffrey Epstein.
