How science is rewriting the rules of marine taxonomy, one seaweed at a time

Along the southern coast, researchers dive deep to collect algae from kelp forests and rock platforms, taking small samples and pinpointing the location of each sample. Back in the laboratory, the specimens are preserved – some dried, others preserved alive – so that they can be studied, cultured and sequenced.
