Mackinac Bridge closed because of falling ice. What we know

The Mackinac Bridge Authority has closed the Mackinac Bridge to all traffic from falling ice on Monday morning, April 6.

At 10:55 a.m. April 6, Bridge Authority announced the closure via X, saying it was “due to hazardous ice conditions,” and “we will share more information as it becomes available.”

All drivers are urged to avoid the bridge while maintenance vehicles monitor conditions.

Falling ice closures are not unusual for the Mackinac Bridge. In 2026, there have been at least a dozen instances of the bridge closing for weather or ice. On average, there is a closure once a year, according to the Mackinac Bridge Authority.

Fallen ice chunks have caused damage to vehicles, and with its size and 100-foot drop, it has the potential to kill or injure drivers. On average, falling ice closures last roughly 5 hours, 54 minutes, the MBA said.

When will the bridge reopen?

A timetable for the Mackinac Bridge reopening on April 6 was not announced by the MBA.

To stay updated on the bridge’s conditions, the MBA gives updates on its official website and posts advisories and updates on its X account.

Additionally, when traveling in the in the Mackinac Straits area, motorist can listen to 530 AM or 1610 AM for updates.

How to view Mackinac Bridge cams

Travelers can check the Mackinac Bridge cams online for updates. The images from multiple cameras are configured to automatically update every 60 seconds.
