As we enter the second week of December, I continue to browse Amazon Prime Video to find the best movies to watch. This week I take you deep into the world of improv comedy with Bryce Dallas Howard and Orlando Bloom, then we return to college with a very funny Tom Hanks circa 2011. After that, it’s a gritty western starring a fierce Peter Dinklage followed by an award-winning post-apocalyptic film that’s not to be missed. Finally, we will participate in an incredible race to save a kidnapped Santa Claus.

So, light your tree and butter your popcorn, these are the five films to watch this week on Prime Video.

Deep coverage

Did someone say fast-paced action comedy? I’m always up for a good time, and that’s exactly what I got out of it Deep coveragewhich is not based on a true story but is inspired by a non-fiction book of the same name by DEA agent Michael Levine.

Directed by Tom Kingsley (Specters British version), the film focuses on an improv comedy teacher named Kat (Bryce Dallas Howard). Just as she begins to wonder if she missed her chance to succeed, Detective Sargeant Billings (Sean Bean) appears and offers her the role of a lifetime. She and her two students, Marlon (Orlando Bloom) and Hugh (Nick Mohammed, Ted Lasso) must go deep undercover by posing as dangerous criminals to infiltrate London’s gangs.

Although released this year, Deep coverage ironically, has gone almost unnoticed until now. It’s such a fun film to watch because it seems so spontaneous and impulsive, thanks to the improvisation aspect. The writers of the film are improv comedians, so they knew what they were doing with this script and they nailed it.

Larry Crowne

I’m not a big fan of romantic comedies, but I am a big fan of Tom Hanks, and for that reason I gave Larry Crowne a photo and I was so happy I did. Despite its cheesy flavor, the film is surprisingly funny, well-written with specific humor complementary to its characters’ personalities, has excellent messages that are relevant today, and features a well-matched cast.

Directed by and with Hanks, Larry Crowne follows a middle-aged man who loses his job and finds himself without prospects because he’s missing a fancy piece of paper: the coveted college degree. With prices rising, a divorce looming, and his income funnel clogged, Larry makes the decision to enroll in school and reinvent himself, which he does hilariously with the help of his younger, hipper classmates. When he finds himself in Ms. Tainot’s (Julia Roberts) class, he falls in love with the passionate but disillusioned teacher.

What I love Larry Crownein addition to the performances, is this sweet story full of quotable dialogue built on the themes of second chances, personal growth and finding a new purpose in life. It also doesn’t hurt that it’s riddled with a fantastic supporting cast, including Bryan Cranston, Cedric the Entertainer, Rami Malek, Taraji P. Henson, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Pam Grier, George Takei, Wilmer Valderrama, Rob Riggle and Randall Park.

The thicket

I don’t know why, but I always like watching westerns this time of year, and The thicket is my must-have western of the season. It features a gripping narrative full of thrills, expansive cinematography, and chilling, visceral performances. It’s also proof that Peter Dinklage can do anything and exceed expectations.

When her younger sister Lula (Esmé Creed-Miles, from Hannah) is kidnapped by murderous outlaw Cut Throat Bill (Juliette Lewis), Jack (Levon Hawke, The crowded room) calls on brutal bounty hunter Reginald Jones (Peter Dinklage) and a group of unlikely heroes to save her. Among them are a former slave, a former sex worker, and a revenge-seeking man named Malachi (Macon Blair, from Blue ruin). Their turn-of-the-century quest leads them straight into the wild and dangerous and lawless area known as the Thicket, where everything comes to a head.

Tubi Original, the film is based on a novel by Joe R. Lansdale. Both works of art take their name from a real-life, heavily forested area in southeast Texas known as the Big Thicket. Thanks to its dense vegetation, it once served as a refuge for outlaws.

The girl with all the gifts

An award-winning blend of drama, suspense, action, sci-fi and horror, The girl with all the gifts offers a new vision of zombie films. Set in a post-apocalyptic world ravaged by infected beings, it’s also your 180-degree break from holiday-centric content.

After a fungal infection transforms most of humanity into mindless, flesh-eating, zombie-like creatures called Hungers, a group of infected children who retain their intelligence emerge. Afterwards, they are held in an underground facility run by the military where they can be studied as humanity’s only hope for healing. Among these children is Mélanie, 10 years old (Sennia Nanua, from The Serpent Queen), the most gifted of all, and she formed a surrogate mother-like bond with her teacher.

When their base is attacked and overrun by hunger, Melanie, her teacher, a scientist and a rigid soldier escape on a journey through the ruins of England, while also confronting their own internal conflicts and identities. For Melanie, she must face the dichotomy between being both an intelligent being and a hungry being while battling the primal instincts of both. You will be absorbed and its ending will piss you off, mainly because it makes perfect sense.

Red

Currently holding the third spot on Prime Video’s Top Ten Movies list, Red is a Christmas action comedy from Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle director Jake Kasdan. Now you know you’re going to have a great time.

When Santa Claus (JK Simmons) – codenamed RED ONE – is kidnapped by an evil villain, it’s up to ELF (Extremely Large and Formidable) agent and North Pole security chief Callum Drift (Dwayne Johnson) to save the day. To locate and rescue the jolly bearded gift-giver, Drift reluctantly teams up with infamous hacker and bounty hunter Jack O’Malley (Chris Evans). Together, the two embark on an action-packed, world-traveling mission to save Christmas.

There’s a lot more going on in Red than the simple kidnapping and attempted rescue of the great man. Clandestine military organizations, secret treaties between mythological creatures and humanity, and an anthropomorphic polar bear agent, plus witty banter between Callum and Jack, await in this epic holiday adventure that will pair well with your movie night popcorn.
