Trump Signs Consolidated Appropriations Act Into Law – RedState

As RedState reported, the House voted 217-214 Tuesday afternoon to accept the Senate’s amendments to the spending package and reopen the federal government. This, in turn, sent the Consolidated Appropriations Act to the desk of President Trump, who signed the bill in the Oval Office later Tuesday afternoon, surrounded by congressional leaders from the Republican Party.

In signing the measure, President Trump gave a speech praising the legislation.

“I am pleased to sign the Consolidated Appropriations Act to immediately reopen the federal government and fund the vast majority of operations through the end of the fiscal year.”

Trump not only highlighted the benefits of the measure itself, but also praised the reopening of the government. He highlighted the negative impact of last fall’s prolonged shutdown on the economy, while touting the solid GDP growth the country is seeing despite it.

“This bill is a big victory for the American people. Instead of a bloated and unnecessary omnibus monstrosity full of giveaways aimed at special interests, we managed to pass a fiscally responsible package that actually cuts wasteful federal spending, while supporting programs critical to the safety, security, and prosperity of the American people.

“And this group of people behind me – and others, got a lot of votes – they really did a fantastic job because shutting down the country… you know, we had a 5. – it feels like 5.6, and it could have been 7. We lost a point and a half because of a 42 day shutdown. And that’s the least of it. But we would have been at 7 – can you believe it? 7 GDP – no one’s ever heard of a 7 GDP. So I’m glad we did that because it would cost us another point and a half or something – or maybe worse.

The president also took the opportunity to celebrate the inclusion in the measure of the Melania Trump Foster Youth to Independence Initiative, while praising the First Lady herself and the success of her recently released documentary.

“Finally, I am extremely pleased to announce that this bill includes a new – oh, wow, movie star! – Melania Trump F.oster Youth Initiative towards Independence. She truly loves children and has been hugely successful. So it’s the number one documentary for 19 years – can you believe it? What do I get out of it? (laughs) I don’t get anything out of it. Now I have – I had a supermodel, now I have a big movie star.

“But we have a great First Lady. She loves children. And she had a tremendous vote on this issue. And I just want to say: Melania Trump promotes young people’s initiative towards independence. within the Department of Housing and Urban Development, which will support youth in foster care across the United States and provide them with critical resources as they age out of the foster care system. And the First Lady loves children, and she’s been very involved with children, helping them and making them better – that’s what she wants to do: wants to help them, and she wants to make them better. She does an excellent job. She is respected and her film has received truly incredible reviews. She’s… we’re all proud of her, actually, it’s incredible. It’s not easy to do, it’s not easy to do.”

As noted, there remains the issue of DHS funding, which leaders in both chambers will need to address over the next 10 days. But the bill funding the rest of the government for fiscal year 2026 is now signed into law, and the president seems very happy with that.
