Honolulu – Hurricane Kiko has weakened in a tropical storm, but could still create surfing and potentially fatal tear in Hawaii, the forecasters said.

The storm was to go north of the Hawaiian islands on Tuesday and Wednesday as it continues to weaken. The threat of direct impacts on the islands has decreased, although the inhabitants of Hawaii are invited to monitor the progress of the storm in case the circumstances change.

With maximum sustained winds at around 60 MPH (97 km / h), Kiko was centered on approximately 245 miles (394 kilometers) northeast of Hilo, Hawaii and around 375 miles (604 kilometers) east of Honolulu.

The storm moved to the west-northwest to 14 mph (23 km / h).

Waves were to peak early on Tuesday to Wednesday, said National Hurricane Center.

There were no coastal watches or warnings in force, said the center.
