‘I’m a Saudi’: Ronaldo’s love letter to Saudi Arabia and his retirement clue

In an emotional speech at the World Tourism Forum in Riyadh, Cristiano Ronaldo reaffirmed his deep connection with Saudi Arabia, describing the Kingdom as his second home and his experience there as “a unique and inspiring chapter” in his legendary career.

“As I always tell the Saudis… I am one of you. I am a Saudi,” Ronaldo said to thunderous applause.

Since his arrival in January 2023, the Al Nassr captain has not only redefined what it means to be an international footballer in Saudi Arabia, but he has also become a key symbol of the Kingdom’s sporting and cultural evolution.

Why Ronaldo calls himself “Saudi”

Ronaldo’s connection to Saudi Arabia goes deeper than football. Since signing for Al Nassr after leaving Manchester United, he and his family have embraced the local culture with remarkable ease.

His partner Georgina Rodriguez and their children have fully integrated into life in Riyadh, with Cristiano Jr even joining the Al Nassr youth academy – an experience which helped him earn a call-up to the Portuguese U16 national team.

Ronaldo’s respect for Saudi customs has also won hearts, from his participation in national celebrations to his traditional dances after scoring, including the now iconic “Agal Celebration” after his decisive goal against Al Fayha.

Ronaldo’s move to the Saudi Pro League in early 2023 was a watershed moment that sparked an influx of world-class talent – from Karim Benzema and Riyad Mahrez to Marcelo Brozovic and Sadio Mane.

“Football here is growing very quickly. The standard is improving every season and I am proud to be part of this journey,” he said at the Riyadh forum.

Retirement Discussions: “Maybe soon…or maybe in 10 years!” »

At 40, Ronaldo shows no signs of slowing down. Yet, speaking on a video call at the Global Investment Summit, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner suggested the end of his playing days could be nearing.

“When I say ‘soon,’ I mean in 10 years,” he joked before adding with a smile: “Of course, I’m joking… but at this point, we’re starting to count the months, not the years.”
