US midfielders Bethune and Hutton move in pair of blockbuster $1m NWSL trades | NWSL

Two of the best young midfielders in American women’s soccer were on the move Wednesday in two seven-figure trades, shaking up the NWSL landscape a month before the season begins.
Croix Bethune, the 2024 Rookie and Midfielder of the Year, was traded from the Washington Spirit to the Kansas City Current for $1 million. In another move, Kansas City traded 2025 Midfielder of the Year finalist Claire Hutton to Bay FC in a $1.1 million deal.
These are the second and third largest intra-league transfers in NWSL history, behind only the $1.25 million Gotham FC paid the North Carolina Courage last year to acquire Jaedyn Shaw.
Bethune, the Spirit’s third overall draft pick in 2024, requested the trade, the club’s president of football operations Haley Carter said in a statement.
“After conversations about his desire to explore development opportunities in a different environment, we were able to structure a deal that honored his request while ensuring significant value for our club,” Carter said. “We evaluate each situation on its individual merits and, in this case, aligning player goals and organizational value made sense for all parties.”
Bethune, 24, had five goals and 10 assists during his rookie campaign for the Spirit in 2024 and won a gold medal at the Paris Olympics with the United States before a knee injury ruled him out for the final two months of the season. She received NWSL Second Team Best XI honors upon her return last year, helping Washington to a second consecutive championship appearance.
The Spirit were arguably the main character of the offseason as they worked to sign Trinity Rodman to an extension within league rules. With their star winger signing on new terms, significant adjustments to remain compliant with league rules were inevitable. Washington’s team is loaded with stars, including Colombian midfielder Leicy Santos, American midfielder Hal Hershfelt, Ivorian forward Rosemonde Kouassi, Nigerian forward Gift Monday and Italian forward Sofia Cantore. Securing interleague transfer funds ($900,000) and allocation funds ($100,000) allows for so much talent to be accommodated.
Yet few would have expected Bethune to be among the collateral departures. She was among Rodman’s closest friends at Spirit, regularly logging on for TikTok dances between goal celebrations. Bethune has also provided a vital link between the midfield and forward lines, although she has already required three ACL surgeries and missed eight months from 2024 to 2025 after tearing a meniscus.
Hutton made his debut at the age of 18 during his 2024 rookie campaign with the Current and has since solidified his place as one of the best defensive midfielders in the league, earning Best XI honors in 2025 and making 13 appearances for the U.S. national team.
“Bay FC is a club with real ambition, and that’s a big part of why this decision feels right to me,” Hutton said in a club statement. “Coach Coates clearly shows how detailed her vision is and how much she values pushing players to continue to improve. The standards she wants to set and the environment the club is building have really resonated with me, and I’m excited to join a group that pushes each other every day as we compete at the highest level while winning championships.”
After making the playoffs in their inaugural season, Bay fell to second place in 2025, failing to win through the entire second half of the season. Turnarounds take talent, and Bay now has a rising star in midfield for club and country. Hutton played a vital role in the Current’s record-breaking regular season, effectively protecting the backline while moving the ball upfield with precision.
The 20-year-old has also been part of Emma Hayes’ rotation. She played a crucial role in helping international teammate Ally Sentnor acclimate to the club, as the two forged a friendship over the years with the U.S. youth national teams. She eyes likely inclusion in the 2027 Women’s World Cup squad.
As for the Current, the moves reinforce an already established area of strength – as they unlock defenses in both transitional and slower phases – while opening up a potential weakness in the terrain Hutton cedes. KC invaded the NWSL en route to the Shield with dizzying precision and already had a talented attacking corps including two-time reigning MVP and Golden Boot winner Temwa Chawinga, Sentnor, American winger Michelle Cooper and three-time MVP finalist Debinha.
Given the injury concerns around Bethune and Debinha, the move will help ease expectations on the 34-year-old Brazil international without asking too much of Bethune in her debut season. Hutton’s minutes will be more directly absorbed by Vanessa DiBernardo, a reliable veteran of the two-way midfielder returning from maternity leave. Beyond DiBernardo, the central midfield is woefully thin without Hutton as the team prepares for its first season under Chris Armas.
