Arsenal women up for WSL awards

Arsenal’s strong December has been rewarded in the latest Women’s Super League award nominations, with recognition from management and playing staff following a run of results that saw the club return to the Champions League places.

Renee Slégers was pre-selected for the Barclays WSL Manager of the Month award after guiding Arsenal to league victories Liverpool And Everton.

These results propelled the team to third place in the standings, surpassing Manchester United and get the team back on track after a difficult start to the season.

Slegers is nominated alongside Andrée Jeglertzwho also led Manchester City to two league victories during the month.

Olivia Smith‘s impact was recognized separately, with the winger nominated for WSL Player of the Month. She opened December with a long-range goal against Liverpool after beating two defenders, before coming off the bench to score a late volley against Everton.

Smith is joined on the Player of the Month shortlist by Honoka Hayashi, Beata Olsson, Olivia Holdt, Khadija Shaw and former Arsenal striker, Vivianne Miedema.

There is additional recognition in the Goal of the month category.

Both of Smith’s league goals in December were nominated, alongside Katie McCabeThe volley against the Toffees.

Hayashi’s goal for Everton against Arsenal was also included.
