The defending world champion of 100 meters Sha’Carri Richardson was arrested last weekend at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport for domestic violence in the fourth degree, according to a police report obtained by the Associated Press.

Nowsweek Contacted the agent and the manager of Richardson by email on Saturday to comment.

Why it matters

The arrest of one of the most important figures of athletics marks another controversial chapter of the turbulent career of Richardson.

This incident comes after its previous legal problems, including a positive marijuana test with 2021 American Olympic trials which prevented it from participating in the Tokyo Olympic Games. Richardson’s model of leave problems threatens its sports achievements and raises questions about the athletes’ driving standards.

What to know

The 25 -year -old sprinter was sentenced to the southern correctional entity (score) to monks, Washington, at 6:54 p.m. local time on Sunday and released on Monday at 1:13 p.m.

Despite the arrest, Richardson competed Thursday in the first round of the 100 female meters at the American athletic championships in Eugene, Oregon.

According to the police report, a transport supervisor Security Administration (TSA) informed the airport agents of a disturbance between Richardson and his boyfriend, his compatriot Sprinter Christian Coleman.

Airport surveillance images would have shown that Richardson grabbing Coleman’s backpack and pulling it on, then seeming to block his way while he was trying to move around her. The report indicates that Coleman was pushed into a wall, and Richardson seemed to launch an object – potentially headphones – to Coleman.

Coleman, also a world class sprinter and former world champion, refused to participate more in the investigation and refused to be considered a victim in the case. Richardson’s curriculum vitae includes the 100 -meter victory at the 2023 world championships in Budapest, winning money at the Paris Olympic Games and contributing to the Olympic gold medal of the American 4×100 relay team.

What people say

USA Track and Field said in a press release: “USATF is aware of reports and does not comment on this question.”

What happens next?

Richardson’s immediate competitive future does not seem to be affected, because it managed to advance in the first round of the 100 meters at the American championships. His automatic qualification for the world championships in Tokyo remains intact because of his status as defending champion.

The accusations of domestic violence in the fourth degree in Washington State are generally classified as raw crimes, which can withstand penalties, including fines and potential prison sentences, if they are convicted.
