China has sent a chilling warning to the world as Beijing boasts of its nuclear capabilities. Victor Gao, vice president of the Center for China and Globalization, said China “He will not fire the first shot”, but the Asian giant “will never allow a second”, in explosive comments posted on social networks.

His boast, translated into English and reported by Pakistani media outlet Observer Diplomat (OD), comes amid an article by the same publication reporting on China’s “advanced” military capabilities, including a missile capable of carrying 60 nuclear warheads and a hydrogen bomb. OD said in an Instagram post: “China emphasizes that any attack, conventional or nuclear, will have devastating consequences.”

Neither the video nor the translation have been independently verified by Express. OD urged his Instagram followers to watch footage of Mr Gao’s reported comments “to understand China’s tough stance and the implications for global security”.

The BBC describes Mr Gao as a staunch supporter of the Chinese Communist Party. He boasted of China’s military prowess as the 80th anniversary of Japan’s formal surrender in World War II approaches.

He told Sky News ahead of the VE Day military parade on September 3 that China would showcase the “best” weapons, drones and robots “ever” at the event. Gao said China’s arsenal would promote peace, adding: “No country should ever dare to impose war on China.”

OD reported that Mr. Gao described a weapon he described as capable of hitting any target in the world in less than 20 minutes, with no possibility of interception.

News of Gao’s hawkish statements came amid growing global tensions and instability, as conflicts rage between Russia and Ukraine, Hamas and Israel. Tensions have also increased in recent months in the South China Sea and the Taiwan Strait.

Gao’s comment, as reported by OD, is in line with his country’s defense policy, which states that China pledges not to first resort to nuclear weapons at any time and under any circumstances.

Its position also includes a commitment not to use or threaten to use nuclear weapons against non-nuclear-weapon states or nuclear-weapon-free zones.

China has 600 nuclear weapons, according to the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN). Its total is dwarfed by the United States, which ICAN says has 5,277, and Russia, which has the most, with a total of 5,449.

As of May, China had the world’s largest armed forces in terms of active-duty military personnel, with more than two million active troops, according to Statista.

China is followed by India (1.46 million), the United States (1.3 million), North Korea (1.28 million) and Russia (1.1 million). The total size of the UK’s full-time armed forces, trained and untrained, is approximately 147,300, according to the House of Commons Library.
