French President Macron Heralds Brigitte Bardot’s ‘Life of Freedom’ — but There’s Just One Problem – RedState

While France’s often embattled President Emmanuel Macron may not quite be one of those political leaders who only opens his mouth to change feet, he’s pretty darn close. This article is not just about one of these eras; it’s also about how ironic and laughable it is in its dishonesty.

Our story begins with the death on Sunday of Brigitte Bardot, the 1960s French sex symbol who became one of the greatest screen sirens of the 20th century, then an animal rights activist and far-right supporter. Although no cause of death was reported, she was hospitalized in November.

Come in, Macron.

Bardot’s death has affected millions of movie fans and free speech supporters around the world. Her death gave Macron an ironic opportunity to praise her as someone who “embodied a life of freedom.”

Macron. Praising someone who “embodied freedom of expression.”

Let me know when you stop laughing – and try not to choke if you eat or drink while reading this, and we’ll move on.

Ready? Here is Macron:

With her films, her voice, her dazzling glory, her initials (BB), her sorrows, her generous passion for animals, and her face that became Marianne, Brigitte Bardot embodied a life of freedom. We mourn a legend of the century.

Seriously, dude? Just one problem.

As political commentator Jonathan Turley wrote on Sunday:

As we have discussed several times on this blog, Bardot has been prosecuted several times by the French government for exercising her freedom of expression.

Bardot died at the age of 91 after spending his life fighting for animal rights and freedom of expression. This latter struggle has repeatedly brought it into conflict with the French government, which has long practiced widespread censorship of its citizens.

Macron himself is clearly an anti-free speech figure, despite the warm reception he has received in recent years from American politicians and media.

How can I say this *tactfully*?

Macron has proven time and time again that he thinks he is the smartest man in the room. As a result, like Russia’s Vladimir Putin, he speaks out of both sides of his mouth – often simultaneously.

Turley continues:

France has been a leader in the rollback of free speech in the West, with more and more laws restricting free speech. These laws criminalize speech under vague standards referring to “inciting” or “intimidating” others on the basis of race or religion.

For example, fashion designer John Galliano was found guilty by a French court of anti-Semitic remarks. [sic] comments against at least three people in a Parisian bar. During her sentencing, Judge Anne Marie Sauteraud read a list of bad words used by Galliano to Géraldine Bloch and Philippe Virgitti, including using “dirty whore” in his criticism.

In another case, the father of French conservative candidate Marine Le Pen was fined for calling people from the Roma minority “smelly”. A French teenager has been charged for criticizing Islam as a “religion of hate”.

Bardot once said:

I am greatly misunderstood by the politically correct idiots. Politics disgusts me.

Although I often feel the same way about the ending of her comment, Ms. Bardot was not misunderstood by the idiots of political correctness – or by anyone else. On the contrary, it was not only clearly understood; she was feared by the left. For good reason: she threatened them with the truth.

May Brigitte Bardot rest in peace.
