This AI Tool Brings Lost Pets Home. Here’s How it Works

A friend recently shared how overwhelming it was to lose (and fortunately find) his pet, without knowing how to reach nearly 4 million people living in Los Angeles.
That – and the slew of national days related to pets in July – prompted my research on how to maximize communication production for missing pets. About 10 million are lost every year in the United States only.
This is also what led me to ask myself how artificial intelligence can help solve this problem for pets and animal owners. Fortunately, Love Lost – A pet recovery platform AI – also had the same idea.
What is love is lost and how does AI use?
Love Lost is a free pet recovery platform developed by Petco Love, the non-profit organization held by the Petco household name which strives to support the initiatives for adoption, recovery and animal care care.
Its free photo correspondence service helps bring together dogs and cats lost with their families, using facial recognition technology that analyzes more than 512 PET characteristics – such as the muzzle, shape, tail and brands – to compare your photo downloaded with a national shelter database, written publications and community bids.
This is thanks to partnerships with companies like Nextdoor, which takes advantage of its publications, and integration with more than 3,000 shelter systems and community platforms for a wider scope. At the time of writing, its database includes more than 300,000 lost and found pets, with an average of 1,000 reunion for pets / months.
How to use Love Lost to find and report the missing pets
Navigate and use the Love Lost site is quite simple – but make sure you have clear photos of the animal you submit ready.
- Access the Petco Love Lost page. No registration is required for its free photo search function.
- Take these well -fired photos and submit your missing or found pet, including the face, body and marks of distinction.
- Once submitted, AI will use animal facial recognition to scan the available PET inputs to try to locate your pet. I tried this using an old leaflet of events with a gray pitbull and I was pleasantly surprised by the precision of the animals he recovered to compare.
- If no immediate correspondence is found, you can publish your pet as lost or found and receive SMS or updates by e-mail. Love Lost Notes that shelters and other humans will continually check the database. Once identified, you can connect via the platform to meet with your animal safely.
If you have not lost a pet, but you want to prepare in case you do, you can save the photo of your animal and the details in advance on the Love Lost website to accelerate the process in the event of an emergency. LOVE LOST also offers advice for pets LOST & Found on its site for more information.
You can enter the address, cross the streets and photos of all the wandering pets that you find on the Love Lost application.
Should you use lost love?
LOVE LOST acts as a bridge for parents of animals and their communities to report and locate the dogs and cats missing. This offers more eyes (and opportunities) to identify stray animals and bring them together with their owners. I also see it as a complementary tool for shelters, community organizers and even your neighbor who needs a way to quickly identify stray animals.
Petco Love also has a four-star charity navigation note for transparency and financial responsibility and has been awarded for its subsidies in the event of a disaster and its innovation in animal welfare in response to forest fires in the 2025.
But while Petco Love declares, it does not sell your data, the language concerning the storage of AI data and the formation of models is minimal and vague. I contacted a request for more information, but I did not hear at the time of the publication.
It is also not known if the data is shared beyond the shelters. So, yes, there is a risk with a public list – even from your pet – to scratch or abuse. The animals that we consider pets or the family are an emotionally loaded subject, but it is important to keep in mind where your data goes after the life -rescue process.
In the end, Love Lost is the national online database of Petco for the accommodation of lost animals – but this also brings together animal -oriented professionals to reach more people and accelerate meetings.
