President Trump claimed Wednesday in a message on his social network Truth that the Iranian president “just asked for a cease-fire in the United States of America!” »

Mr. Trump said the “president of the new Iranian regime, much less radicalized and much more intelligent than his predecessors,” had called for the ceasefire. Iran currently has the same president it has had since July 2024, however, when the president Massoud Pezeshkian took office.

Pezeshkian, long seen as a more moderate figure than the Islamic clerics and Revolutionary Guard Corps commanders who have long held most of the power in the country, said Tuesday that Iran had the “necessary will” to reach a deal to end the war, but he added that doing so would require security guarantees for Tehran.

“We possess the necessary will to end this conflict, provided that the essential conditions are met – in particular the guarantees required to prevent the repetition of aggression,” Pezeshkian told the president of the European Council in a telephone call, according to Iranian state media.

Mr. Trump did not indicate whether he was referring to Pezeshkian, or whether his administration had received a separate communication from other Iranian leaders, saying only that the United States would consider the alleged Iranian request, “when the Strait of Hormuz is open, free and clear.”

President Trump gave Iran until April 6 to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and threatened to “destroy” its civilian power plants if it did not do so, as well as possible strikes on Iranian water desalination plants and other infrastructure.
