Iran’s envoy denies UN nuclear inspectors in the country are being threatened
The Iranian ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, denied allegations that Iran threatened or called for the execution of the International Atomic Energy Agency (AIEA), the general manager Rafael Grosi.
In an interview on “Face The Nation” by CBS News, Iravani was questioned about the warning of the Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Saturday that “calls in Iran” for the arrest and execution of gross “are unacceptable and should be convicted”.
“To be clear, does Iran threaten UN inspectors?” Moderator Margaret Brennan asked Iravani.
“No, there is no[t] Any threat, “said Iravani, adding that cooperation with the AIEA has been suspended,” but there is no[t] Any threat against the director general of the IAEA. »»
Iravani argued that Iran will criticize the IAEA but suggested that any threat would come from the individual level and do not reflect the general vision of the government.
“Maybe someone-this is an individual opinion of people who can criticize the IAEA or threaten the director general,” he said. “But we criticize the IAEA. Our evaluation is that they did not do their job. ”
Iravani also assured Brennan that inspectors are safe but that they cannot resume their labor inspection.
“They are in Iran. They are in a safe state, but the activity has been suspended,” he said. “They cannot have access to our site.”
When Brennan asked if Iravani would condemn the calls for the execution of the head of the IAEA, the Iranian envoy said: “Yes”, before saying something inaudible.
Rubio published his statement on Saturday, calling on Iranian officials to condemn calls for gross execution.
“We support the critical efforts to verify and monitor the Laea in Iran and congratulate the Director General and Laea for their dedication and their professionalism. We call on Iran to provide the security and security of the AIAA personnel,” he wrote.
