Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar has sharply criticized the Australian government following Sunday’s shooting at a Hanukkah event in Sydney.

“I am appalled by the deadly shooting at a Hanukkah event in Sydney, Australia,” Saar wrote in a post on the social media platform X.

He said the Jewish community had been targeted and Sunday’s shootings were the result of “the anti-Semitic rampage on the streets of Australia over the past two years”.

“The Australian government, which has received countless warning signals, must come to its senses!” he wrote.

Australian authorities have yet to comment on possible motives, saying only that two people were in custody following the shooting at Sydney’s Bondi Beach.

Australian media reported that dozens of shots were fired and there were many casualties.

The Australian Jewish Association said the shooting took place during a public Hanukkah event.
