Elgato’s New Webcam Has DSLR-Like Interchangeable Lens Filters

Elgato has just introduced the Facecam 4K, a powerful $ 200 webcam with a unique interchangeable objective filter system. This can be an interesting option for those who want an “digital reflex” webcam experience, at least in terms of formal factor or personalization.

The FaceCam 4K is a suite from Elgato ProCam Pro, which sells $ 300. And, if you take a look at Elgato’s practical comparison sheet, you will see that these two products are quite similar. Both support 4K 60FPS video and offer a 90 -degree FOV. They use 1/4 “tripod assembly systems, they work with Camera Hub Elgato software, and they have an on -board memory to store your settings.

But FaceCam 4K also contains exclusive features, including HDR recording and an interchangeable objective filter system. I don’t have much to say about the HDR thing (it is limited to 4K 30FPS), although the interchangeable lens filter system is quite neat. You can attach any lens filter of 49 mm (or lens cap) to the FaceCam 4K, which means that you can use creative filters to make camera effects on camera Or Use corrective polarizing filters to reduce reflections, correct your complexion or increase the contrast of the camera. Elgato plans to sell personalized lens filters, but any 49 mm filter that you can find on Amazon, a cameras store or an antiques store will work.

That said, the old facecam pro always offers a better image quality than the Facecam 4K. Its large f / 2.0 opening and its variable focus system are more effective than the narrower f / 4.0 opening of the 4K facecam and the fixed focus system, in particular in low -light environments. And I do not theorize here, Elgato says the same thing on his comparison page. The company even takes the time to explain that if FaceCam 4K offers an adjustable noise reduction, “FaceCam Pro does not include noise reduction because it simply does not need it; its larger sensor and its F / 2.0 lens naturally offer a clean and low noise image.”

Judging by the specifications, Facecam 4K of Elgato is probably equally with other webcams in this price range. It almost corresponds to the specifications of the Logitech MX Brio Ultra, for example, although it has a higher maximum image frequency and a narrower maximum opening. The interchangeable lenses filter system is the real sales argument here, although I must emphasize that there are very good digital spare reflexes in the $ 200 range. If you want DSLR level customization, you may just have to buy a digital SLR.
