The 6 greatest Netflix Originals nobody seems to remember

Netflix pioneered the idea of streaming services creating their own original content, exclusive to each platform. Overall it worked well and it shows Stranger Things became major successes.
On the other hand, many Netflix Originals have disappeared quite quickly after release, some with good reason. However, there are a few that I think are worth rediscovering, even if they’re buried under a huge mountain of other things to watch.
The OA
The OA It’s weird in every sense of the word. I love mysterious stories that aren’t properly explained until the end, if ever, and this series fits that bill perfectly. It’s an intoxicating blend of non-linear storytelling blending near-death experiences, mad science, and parallel universes with a plot that’s very open to interpretation.
It’s not for everyone, but an experimental show like The OA probably would have done better if it was released today rather than in 2016. If you haven’t seen it yet and have a Netflix subscription, it’s worth taking a look at this 16-episode brain teaser.

Spirit Hunter
In a sea of “true crime” content, Spirit Hunter stands out as an absolutely stellar dramatization of the beginnings of forensic psychology and criminology. The show dramatizes the early development of behavioral science within the FBI’s Behavioral Science Unit. The performances, the look and feel of the period settings, and the fascinating details of how we began to understand (or misunderstand) the criminal mind are first class.
Unfortunately, the series was not renewed for a third season and therefore does not have a satisfying ending. According to Netflix, it was simply too expensive, but there were rumors that series producer David Fincher might wrap up the story with a trilogy of films. However, as of this writing, there is no confirmation that this has been given the green light. Either way, it’s worth seeing the chilling depictions of famous serial killers, some of which are Oscar-worthy.

I am a mother
While browsing Netflix, I came across I am a mother by accident, and I’m glad I did because this 2019 Australian sci-fi thriller directed by Grant Spoutore is right up my alley.
It tells the story of a robot raising a human girl in a post-apocalypse, presumably to repopulate the world. However, as expected, revelations soon arise that cast doubt on his robot mother’s intentions. Although I am a mother was a low budget film, the visuals and visual effects are excellent, the tense action scenes are phenomenal, and best of all, the writing is on par with my favorite sci-fi short stories.

Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance
The dark crystal is a classic film for a reason, and Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance is a delightful expansion of the world of this original film. It still has the charm and strangeness of the original puppet-based depiction of a distant fantasy world, but it’s complemented by modern CG and VFX technology to produce something that’s the best of both eras.
The series is a prequel to the original film, and it’s truly wonderful whether you’ve seen the original or not. It was critically acclaimed and even won an Emmy, but Netflix canceled it after just one season. Again, it seems like it was too expensive and too few people tuned in to watch it. I guess it’s better to have 10 reality shows that people can’t turn off than one good TV show.
Okja
Before people went crazy for South Korean content on streaming services, there was this one in 2017. Okja. Directed by Bong Joon Ho of Snowdrops And Parasite fame, this film was made between these two giants.
Okja is a moving, creative and quirky story about a young girl trying to save her genetically modified “superpig” (even though it always seems to me that it looks like a modified hippopotamus). This Animal was designed for meat production and so, like Bong’s other major films, it’s a critique of capitalism and corporate greed, but it’s also a damn good story that will tug at your heartstrings.

Seis Manos
Netflix has been pretty good on the original animation front, and it has also done a great job bringing animation from Japan and other countries to a global audience. In 2019 we had Seis Manoswhich is difficult to describe in a sound clip. The visual style is clearly inspired by certain Japanese animation productions but also very clearly its own. The show was animated by Powerhouse Animation Studios, the same people who gave us the excellent Castlevania adaptation.
The setting is Mexico and the story revolves around supernatural creatures and events. It follows three orphans trained in martial arts who work with law enforcement to fight demons. Seis Manos is a incredibly a violent grindhouse-style story that fuses various unique influences into something interesting. There’s only one season, but it’s worth it.
