Former Republican New York City Councilman Joe Borelli blasted Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Saturday as CNN host Sara Sidner defended him.

After Sidner played a clip during the “Table For Five” segment of “CNN Saturday Morning” in which President Donald Trump said Newsom should not run for the White House because of his dyslexia and called him “stupid,” she asked Borelli if those comments were a “huge mistake.” Borelli said Trump shouldn’t equate dyslexia with a lack of intelligence, but he acknowledged Newsom is “stupid.” (RELATED: ‘Protect and Support’: Gavin Newsom Signs Multiple Bills Pushing Gender Ideology)

“[I]Is it fair to call Gavin Newsom stupid? Yes, why not? I mean, Trump is constantly called every name in the book, calling him stupid,” Borelli said.

Sidner interrupted the Republican to point out that Trump was the president.

“This is the president who is being called a dictator, a fascist, a white supremacist, a racist,” Borelli retorted. “So when he calls someone stupid who is potentially a challenger to his party’s presumptive nominee – and by the way, I think Gavin Newsom is stupid because he’s made stupid decisions on high-speed rail, sanctuary city policies – all of those things indicate to me that, yes, he’s stupid and people are continually fleeing his state because of these policies. So I’m not worried about Trump calling him stupid. Dyslexia is another thing.”

“It’s one of the greatest economic powers in this country,” Sidner responded.

Borelli, however, said California’s economic strength is primarily due to its large population. He also noted that many Californians have left the Golden State.

“[M]“More people have left the state of California because of decisions made not only by Gavin Newsom, but also by the California legislature,” he said. “More people have left this state and fled because of these decisions. It is fair and proper criticism for Republicans to point out that these policies are stupid.”

Newsom has been criticized for years by California voters for his policies, particularly on crime and homelessness.

Victor Davis Hanson, a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, also accused Newsom of stupidity during a Tuesday episode of “Victor Davis Hanson: In His Own Words.”

“[E]Every time he opens his mouth he says something foul, vile, mean, stupid or self-incriminating,” Hanson said.

Additionally, Democratic strategist James Carville became angry during a March 19 Politicon video in response to Trump saying Newsom should not become president because of his dyslexia.

“I love that I have dyslexia. I love that I have a short attention span. The only thing I’ve been able to focus on in my whole life is how much I hate you,” Carville said. “I can focus on that all day. And you know what? I’m glad I’m like that… I’m asking all of you who have a learning disability or are dealing with a child or family member who has a learning disability. [disability] hate that son of a bitch as much as I do.

Newsom ranks second, behind former Vice President Kamala Harris, in the 2028 Democratic primary polls, according to the RealClearPolling average. An April poll by the Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies found that 54 percent of 6,201 registered voters believed Newsom was “doing things that could benefit him as a potential presidential candidate,” while only 26 percent thought he was “governing the state and helping to solve its problems.”
