As always, the latest edition of The classic was played with great intensity by Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, with players from both teams fighting hard in the duels. In one such duel in the 20th minute, BVB defender Nico Schlotterbeck violently tackled Bayern right back Josip Stanišić, hitting the ball first, but then finding Stanišić’s shins first with more than reasonable force. Even Schlotterbeck himself admitted he was lucky not to be sent off for the tackle.

After the match, Stanišić agreed with this sentiment, stating that he disagreed with the referee’s decision not to show Schlotterbeck the red card. “I don’t know how the referee decided it wasn’t a red card. Yes, he received the ball first, but the red card is there to protect the players. For me it was a clear red and I told the referee that too.”

In his view, the Bundesliga refereeing has not been consistent in its decisions, referring to an incident with Bayern Munich loanee João Palhinha last season and complaining about Schlotterbeck not receiving a red card. “We had a similar situation with João Palhinha against Bochum, where he got the ball and then hit the opponent, and he received a straight red – and then we lost that game. I think Schlotterbeck was more than lucky to stay on the pitch today,” the defender said.
