Krill fishing near Antarctica has reached a record level, almost a seasonal capture limit that could close fishing early. This boom follows the failure of last year by several governments to approve a new management plan. During the first seven months of the 2024-25 season, Krill fishing reached 518,568 tonnes, or about 84% of the limit of 620,000 tonnes. The Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Life Resources reported an increase of almost 60% in an area. Krill is crucial for marine ecosystems and climate regulations, but increased demand and fishing pressure threaten their stocks.
