Krugman: Trump’s Own Adviser Just Admitted to the Scam at MAGA’s Core

Donald Trump’s top trade advisor, Peter Navarro, just made an extraordinary statement on Fox News. He admitted that we should lower our expectations for job creation because of Trump’s success in expelling immigrants from the country. In essence, Navarro suggested that it was a GOOD thing to have a lower number of jobs provided that the (assumed) cause is an increase in evictions, and confirmed that the expulsion of immigrants isn’t it create jobs for Americans. We think this provides an opening to explore what the MAGA economy is actually trying to accomplish. So we spoke with economist Paul Krugman, author of an enlightening article on his excellent Substack which dismantles Trump’s immigration program. He explains how Navarro destroyed a fundamental scam that Trump had long peddled about immigrants, how it undermines the most fundamental story MAGA tells about the economy, and how Democrats can take advantage of the failure of that story to tell a better one.
