LaLiga: Javier Tebas announces an offside rule revolution for next season

Spanish football could undergo a major technological evolution starting next season. LaLiga is considering changing the way offside situations are detected, with the introduction of a more precise, fully automated system that has been approved by FIFA.

The announcement was made by LaLiga president Javier Tebas during the presentation of the first collective agreement for professional referees in Madrid. The aim is to improve the reliability of officiating decisions and reduce controversies related to offside positions.

A more advanced technology than the current system

Currently, the Spanish league uses the semi-automated offside technology, known as SAOT, which works in coordination with video assistant refereeing (VAR). However, this setup still relies on detecting the exact moment the ball is played, which can sometimes lead to uncertainty.

The LaLiga president emphasized this technological leap, explaining:

“We are in the process of implementing the automated offside system. We’ll see if it’s ready for next year. Right now, there’s a semi-automated system, but I don’t like the term ‘semi-automated.’ The new system would involve integrating a FIFA-approved chip into the ball to detect handball infractions.”
