Laura Dern’s 90th-birthday tribute to late mom Diane Ladd

Actress Laura Dern has posted a bittersweet tribute to late mother Diane Ladd on what would have been her 90th birthday.
“Happy birthday to my hero, the most amazing person I have ever known, on what would be his 90th birthday today,” Dern wrote on Instagram on Saturday. “As an artist and a human being, you have always loved, always dreamed, always created and always served all. I love you, mom.”
The three-time Academy Award and Emmy nominee died on November 3 at the age of 89, with Dern by her side.
“She was the greatest daughter, mother, grandmother, actress, artist and empathetic spirit that only dreams could have created,” Dern wrote in a statement at the time. “We were lucky to have her. She’s flying with her angels now.”

Ladd died of hypoxic respiratory failure, according to her death certificate obtained by People. Lack of oxygen in the blood is usually caused by underlying lung disease. The certificate said she had long suffered from interstitial lung disease, when the lungs are compromised by scarring or other damage. Ladd was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis in 2018.
The mother and daughter starred together in “Wild at Heart” and “Rambling Rose.” Ladd was also known for her role in “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore” as well as the television sitcom “Alice.”
The couple grew closer after Ladd’s diagnosis in 2018 and wrote a memoir together in 2023, “Honey, Baby, Mine: A Mother and Daughter Talk Life, Death, Love,” detailing their deepening.
