Can you play “Danny Boy” on a telephone model? After 34 years of operation, AOL ends its end of its numbering service. The news is sure to cause a shock for Internet users across the country, many of which are probably wondering “AOL always had a dial-up?”

But if you live in a rural area, it is not as surprising. As a person who has to use DSL every time I visit my parents-in-law and who had to fight to bring my mother to go from an AOL browser to Chrome when I was at university, I can see why AOL’s dial-up lasted so long. According to an American census of 2019, 265,000 people in the United States are still on dial-up, and the brand of AOL in particular has come with a certain family veneer.

The company was known to make products that are easy to use by focusing on personality, so it’s funny how little the stop notice is not a fanfare. In a blog of 100 words published during the weekend, AOL simply declared that its numbering service “will no longer be available in AOL plans” from September 30, 2025. There is also a dial-up in the trash, the AOL Dialeer software that you would really use to connect, as well as the Brower Pro Browser, a Brome Profess older.

As for what AOL will always offer, it turns out that AOL is more a data security company now, with a certain number of identification protection features aimed at companies than individual users. That said, you can always register for a free AOL plan if you want a nostalgic email address, although paid and free users will have to obtain their real internet connections elsewhere in the future.

However, there is hope for anyone who always clings to a shouting telephone model for its internet connection. Services like Netzero and Juno always offer numbering plans in certain postal codes, and Netzero will actually connect you for free if you use less than 10 hours per month. What do you think so far?

Even better, the classic AOL experience is nowhere. While AOL ends the numbering service, it will continue to offer its AOL GOLD GOLD plan, which, in addition to including tools to protect you from Keyloggers and phishing attempts, also gives you access to the classic AOL browser, as opposed to the more chromed Shield Pro. He even has the notification “You Got Mail”.
