Lexar’s Magnetic Phone SSD Is Now Available

The Lexar ES5 Magnetic Portable SSD, which was first announced in July, is officially available to buy now. Lexar is clearly targeting Apple users with the ability to magnetically stick the SSD right to the back of any iPhone that supports MagSafe accessories.
The magnetic attachment is the main selling point here. For those of you who don’t have a MagSafe-compatible device, Lexar thought of you, too. This device comes with an extra metal ring accessory that you can stick onto other devices or surfaces to give yourself a magnetic mounting point. So whether you’re shooting on an iPhone or just want to quickly attach the drive to your laptop, you’ve got options.
The Lexar ES5 delivers read and write speeds of up to an incredible 2000MB/s over its USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 interface. That kind of speed is essential if you’re working with high-bandwidth video files, letting users interact with content without delay. If you’ve got a PC that supports USB 3.2 Gen 2×2, you’re going to see those top-tier transfer rates, which are much faster overall than a lot of other portable drives out there.

Lexar designed this drive specifically to handle the demands of professional-grade mobile video recording. When you connect the ES5 to an iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max, you unlock direct 4K Apple ProRes recording at up to 60fps. If you’re on a newer phone like the iPhone 16 or 17, that speed jumps to an even wilder 120fps. When paired with a Samsung Galaxy S25 or newer, the drive is fast enough to capture Samsung Pro Video clips at up to 8K/30fps.
This puts it squarely in the category of drives built for high-bandwidth recording, not just shuffling files. Being able to bypass the internal storage limits of a mobile device for uninterrupted, high-quality recording is a massive win for mobile content creators.
Lexar didn’t skimp on the durability, either. The ES5 is rated IP65 for dust and water resistance. To be fair, this means splashes are okay, but don’t go trying to completely dunk it underwater. More importantly, it’s also tested to survive drops from up to three meters, which is just shy of 10 feet.
Lexar is planning a massive 4TB version, but you’ll have to wait until early next year, specifically Q1 of 2026, for that one to hit the market. The drive also comes with the Lexar App, which makes setting up automatic photo and video backups easy and helps expand your phone’s storage.
As for availability, the Lexar ES5 Magnetic Portable SSD is available right now. You can snag the 1TB capacity for $120 on Amazon. If you need more room for all that 4K and 8K footage, the 2TB model is available for a retail price of $200 on Amazon.
