Lions offense bullied by Eagles in 16-9 loss to drop out of NFC playoffs

PHILADELPHIA − The offensive explosion of the Detroit Lions lasted a week.
The Lions are out of the NFC playoffs with seven games remaining, after losing Sunday night 16-9 to the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field. Philadelphia (8-2) remains atop the NFC, while the Lions (6-4) have fallen to eighth in the NFC playoff standings.

The Lions defense, despite missing three secondary starters, played well enough to win against an Eagles offense that is the highest paid in the NFL, but the offense was intimidated by the Eagles defense as Jared Goff watched his offensive line beat in front all day.
Goff has missed 16 of his last 18 pass attempts.
Coach Dan Campbell, calling the offense paying off for the second straight week, saw his Lions go 0 for 5 on fourth down, including short-yardage stuff in the first half on a fake punt and on fourth-and-1, and on the goal line on an incompletion.
Then, trailing 16-6 in the fourth quarter with 5:12 to play, he kicked a fourth-and-10 from the Lions’ 42.

The Lions will host the New York Giants (2-9) next Sunday at 1 p.m. at Ford Field to begin a three-game homestand.
