Before joining Olympique Lyonnais this summer, Tyler Morton participated in England U21’s triumph at the Euro. The Liverpool academy product came off the bench as England lifted the trophy, then quickly completed his move to Groupama Stadium, where he started.

Morton has struggled to find game time at Anfield, but since joining OL he has been the centerpiece of Paulo Fonseca’s side. The midfielder has already made 29 appearances this season and has received praise for his performances.

Morton inspired by Scott’s summons

He is part of a high-flying Lyon team that is currently on the podium and is therefore in contention to win the UEFA Champions League next season, while this season the UEFA Europa League title is a realistic goal, given that they finished top of the ‘League Stage’ table.

And Morton has now revealed another goal. “A place in the England squad for the World Cup? It’s not something that obsesses me on a daily basis, but it’s a goal to play for my country. With the U21 team we won the Euros and that was incredible, so to play for the first team would be incredible,” Morton said at a news conference this week.

He added, I think about the present and I know that if I concentrate on playing at my best, it will come. Alex Scott is a player I was close to, and seeing him called up gives me a lot of confidence for the future. It would be amazing for my family and I if that happened. But for that I have to keep working and improving.
