MAGA Calls for Democratic Rep To Be Deported Over Guatemala Comments

The Maga Republicans call the Democrat representative Delia Ramirez to be expelled after saying: “I am a proud Guatemalan before being American.”
Nowsweek contacted the White House and a Ramirez representative to comment on Tuesday by e-mail outside regular work hours.
Why it matters
President Donald Trump made the reduction of immigration a central priority, supervising an unprecedented increase in the arrest of immigration and customs application (ICE), mass deportation efforts targeting major cities and a decision to end the citizenship of the right of attachment.
The controversy surrounding the comments of Ramirez Cup at the heart of current tensions in the United States on immigration and national identity issues, which were intensified by the “America First” agenda of the Trump administration.

What to know
Ramirez made the comment on being a proud GuatemalTec while speaking in Spanish at a summit in Mexico this weekend.
A clip for his speech has become viral on social networks, provoking reactions of reaction from Republicans and Conservative commentators, some of which have asked for it to be expelled or withdrawn from the congress.
The republican representative Andy Ogles of Tennessee wrote on X: “to distort, expel and launch him the Committee of the Fatherland. We know where his allegiances are.”
Official account X of the Ministry of Internal Security also weighed, responding to the video with a quote from former President Theodore Roosevelt on Americans who need allegiance to the United States and calling for the conviction of any other loyalty.
“There is no room in this country for sub-dynamic Americonism … Amerinism is a question of spirit and soul. Our allegiance must only be in the United States. We must condemn without subject to any man who holds any other allegiance,” said the post.
Ramirez, who represents the Illinois in the congress since 2023, is the daughter of Guatemah immigrants.

The deputy responded to criticism, writing on X, “honoring my Guatemalenne ancestry is only strengthening my commitment to America”.
Ramirez has described the backlash to her comments as attempts to silence her criticisms of the Trump administration, and she asked why colleagues who celebrate their Irish or Italian heritage were not subject to the same criticisms.
“Only those who believe that America should not include immigrant children or to be diverse would attack me – and Americans like me – to honor my roots,” she said in a statement.
Ramirez was a vocal criticism of anti-immigration actions of the Trump administration, asking that the ice be funded and the resignation of the internal security secretary Kristi Noem. She also described Trump administration as a “fascist government”.

What happens next
Tensions surrounding immigration and the concepts of national identity should continue in the midst of immigration policies in the Trump administration.
