Eight-time Super Bowl winner coach Bill Belichick is not a first-ballot Hall of Famer, ESPN’s Don Van Natta Jr. and Seth Wickersham reported Tuesday.

Belichick did not receive the offer after missing the 40 out of 50 votes needed for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame during his first year of eligibility.

The former New England Patriots head coach had the most Super Bowl victories as a head coach (six), and ranked first in Super Bowl appearances (nine) and playoff victories (31) and second in wins (333). His NFL record of 333-178, including regular season and playoffs, places him only second to Don Shula (347) in career wins. He also won two championships as defensive coordinator with the New York Giants.

Multiple sources told ESPN’s Van Natta and Wickersham that Spygate and Deflategate, two cheating scandals that occurred at different points during the Patriots’ dynasty, came up during voter deliberations.

Nonetheless, Belichick’s decorated career as an NFL head coach led many fans and Hall of Fame voters to believe he was a lock in the first round. Instead, he’ll have to wait until at least next year to get the call to Canton, Ohio.

According to Van Natta and Wickersham, Belichick told an associate, “Six Super Bowls isn’t enough?” while he asked another: “What’s a guy to do?”

Some of the NFL’s biggest names echoed Belichick’s thoughts, as the sports world reacted quickly to the news.

Three-time Defensive Player of the Year JJ Watt immediately expressed shock that Belichick wasn’t inducted in the first round, and Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes called him “crazy.”
