Nearly a month after the United States and Israel launched military attacks on Iran, a series of new national polls indicate that most Americans reject military strikes.
But the surveys underscore the persistence of a broad partisan divide between Democrats and Republicans over the ongoing fighting in a volatile Middle East.
Forty-two percent of voters support ongoing U.S. military action against Iran, and 58 percent oppose it, including nearly four in ten who are strongly opposed, according to a Fox News national poll conducted last Friday through Monday (March 20-23) and released Wednesday.
This is a change from the previous Fox News poll, conducted February 28 to March 2, where respondents were evenly divided on their support for the strikes.

The Fox News poll is far from the only one to point to underwater support for the fighting.
Fifty-four percent of voters surveyed in a Quinnipiac University poll conducted March 19-23 said they opposed military action, while 39 percent supported it.

In a Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted March 20-22, only 35 percent said they supported the strikes, and 61 percent said they disapproved of the military action.
According to an AP/NORC poll of respondents conducted March 19-23, six in 10 said military action against Iran had gone too far, with just over a quarter saying it was about right and 13 percent saying it had not gone far enough.

And a Pew Research Center poll conducted March 16-22 indicated that 61% disapproved of President Donald Trump’s handling of the conflict with Iran, and 37% approved.
Military attacks by the United States and Israel led to the deaths of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other top officials, as well as the decimation of the country’s military.
But Iran has responded with attacks on Israel and many of its other regional neighbors.

And Iran has targeted energy facilities with missile and drone attacks in a number of Persian Gulf countries. It also made the Strait of Hormuz nearly impassable for commercial shipping, cutting off about 20 percent of the world’s oil supply and, as a result, causing fuel prices in the United States and around the world to skyrocket.
Trump said Thursday that Iran was “begging for a deal” to end the fighting.

While many Democratic political leaders have criticized Trump’s handling of the conflict, most Republicans stand with the president.
And this is reflected in the opinions of Democratic and Republican voters.

The partisan divide was stark in the Fox News poll.
More than three-quarters (77%) of Republicans supported the effort, compared to 12% of Democrats and 28% of independents. Within the GOP, support ranged from 90% among MAGA supporters to 52% among non-MAGA Republicans.
The gap was just as wide in other polls, including Quinnipiac, where 86 percent of Republicans supported military action, compared to 28 percent of independents and just 5 percent of Democrats.
